You know those friends that you communicate with entirely through gifs and TikTok links? Well, last week, my best friend sent me this:
I've only ever played one Monster Hunter game, and it was Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate on 3DS. I was enjoying it, for the most part - I played with a few friends that were a lot more experienced than me, and they helped me take down some of the trickier monsters. I also had sweet Poogie there with me to make it all okay with his TINY LITTLE BEE COSTUME. Honestly, how is there not a game about Poogie? I only kill monsters to keep my boy in new outfits.
Then again, there were outfits for me, too - the incredible ensembles that I would make out of the various monster bits I cut off my prey. Despite being gender-locked - so sometimes my friends would get the cool armour, and I would get some terrible bikini, or sometimes I'd get something rad, and they'd get, like, a teddy bear outfit - the outfits were my second-favourite part of the game. After Poogie, obviously.
And then I faced the Gore Magala, a tricky purple wyvern-thing who I hope is in hell right now. I faced the Gore Magala around five times before I gave up, and sold the game. I'm sorry, Poogie. I failed you.
So I wasn't too interested in Monster Hunter Rise, having steadily ignored the last few MH games. I prefer my wrists and fingers intact, thanks, and Monster Hunter isn't exactly known for letting players take the easy way out.
But Capcom keeps putting out these cute little artworks that remind me of the reasons I do like the Monster Hunter games. There's a lot of humour, sweetness, and light in amongst all the dragon-slaying and egg-crushing. And yes, my wrists will not thank me, especially if I pick a weapon as fiddly as the Insect Glaive again, but I'll just take breaks to wander around the town with Poogie.
Hang on, Poogie is definitely in this one, right?

That little Owl beastie is unbelievably cute!
Props to the artist that drew it!
That owl is pretty dang adorable.
My god you can pet the s*** out of that dog hahahaha
I'm with you buddy.
Forget about petting the dog. Doing secret handshakes with your Palico is where it's at!
And they're called Cahoots! CAHOOTS! And they can wear cute outfits! This is very exciting. I got into the series at MHGen, I really wasn't expecting it to work for me, I tend to struggle with harder games, but here I am, super hyped for Rise. I'm also working my way backwards through the older games.
@Fantasia Poor Palicos are getting overshadowed by the Palamutes. They need some love too!
@Kieroni get the feeling no one will be using palicos, unless they buff them up to be more beneficial.
@Lord I've been wondering about that. I only got to play base World fir a little bit, and blitzed through the story, so I don't know how useful Palicos ended up being in G rank. I'm bad at dodging, so I always appreciate the extra heals, but in the demo they aren't feeling even as useful as World.
Granted, they aren't dying as easily as even my overpowered MHGU healer, but still.
The demo made me realize how much Rise just felt like DLC. I guess don't fix what ain't broke but man... it's hard to get excited for this after playing a proper upgrade like world.
I also can't believe how adorable the promotional artwork is for MHRise! I don't usually follow game accounts on social media but now I have to follow Rise's for all the cute art!
@Kieroni The mobility of Palamutes, like traversing maps faster and sharpening/healing while riding, guarantees that Palamutes will be used more than Palicoes, unfortunately. With that said, you'll have plenty of cat people like GaijinHunter staunchly representing Palicoes in online hunts!
You can oet dog? Screw my dead cells pre order time to pet the dog
@Bliquid I feel like Rise is a very good blend of the good parts of both the new and old world. I found World to be beautiful and full of great QoL improvements, but even as someone who came into the franchise pretty late, I still found sone things that made me not enjoy World as much as Gen or 4U. So I'm happy this isn't a direct sequel, it feels like a great progression to the series.
@Ulysses Yeah, probably. I want to bring cats, but things like the stupid fast vine climb, the free wall run, and the items and gathering while riding will probably leave me a Palamute user, at least at first. The higher ranks may leave me needing the extra heals
Oh. I'm still not going to play it, but the art is cute.
-2021 NINJAS HATE MONSTER HUNTING CONFIRMED-
I genuinely think this is going to be the game of the year, not just on Switch but better than anything else that gets released all year
Where is doggo petting simulator? Why isn't that a thing yet?
Didn't like other old iterations of the game. Didn't like the demo. Guess I can't like every game.
This is very Buzzfeed. CAPITAL LETTERS!
@ATaco not sure what you played then cuz rise feels much different compared to like GenU and even world. The core gameplay loop of hunting, carving, making armor, hunting again is there but if your gonna change that then you might as well make a spinoff.
@ATaco world was a proper upgrade? It looked nice but I felt it was a step backwards. This feels like a proper upgrade, but that is just me.
@maulinks not just that, but the Palimute also react to your emote.
@ATaco Monster Hunter Rise is not a DLC, Monster Hunter Rise is the next mainline game of the franchise, it feature several new mechanics, introduce new locales/characters and monsters, Capcom consider Monster Hunter Rise, the game the next mainline entry of the franchise, Monster Hunter Rise is not a expansion like Monster Hunter Iceborne.
@ATaco im with you on that,im trying so hard to like this game but it just doesn't feel as fluid as World and yeah, im trying...
@PortablexombieV2 world introduced so many quality of life changes, like auto crafting, the maps being one big zone instead of segmented, drinking potions will moving, stuff like that. The only thing I could think of being a step back was the amount of monster the game has, which was fixed with events and the iceborne expansion. Thats my opinion though
Monster Hunter Rise is gonna be a hit if that's all it takes.
@maulinks i was gonna say, that's a loooong petting session, lol.
@Lord I'm looking forward to playing a cat riding a dog - my kitty solo'd most of the way through G3 last time before I ran out of free time, so he definitely deserves it.
I was lured in by hat adorable owl art and then presented with a completely different style of artwork. I'm confused why use one artwork to thumbnail an article about different artwork? The other stuff is cute yeah but I want more of the owl style.
Gave MH World a go recently and really struggled to get into it. Granted I was playing solo and it would have been much better multi-player, but I felt bad for the 'monsters', which let's be real in the context of the game are simply wildlife. The story seemed to be "hey we found this island but the wildlife is super inconvenient so just go kill it ok?", which on it's own I can ignore but coupled with the way the things limp away desperately trying to escape... I just felt bad doing it! People often tout Shadow of the Colossus as being the game that makes you feel bad for your actions but dang...Monster Hunter makes me feel worse than that game ever did! Monster Hunters are apparently not hunters of monsters but hunters who are monsters.
Why are people saying they'll have to pick between the cat or dog when you can have both...
@ATaco Same here. I know World got a lot of critique from Diehard MH fans, but honestly I really enjoyed the game and Iceborne is pretty awesome and added what people were missing from the base game.
MH World just feels much more fluid, incredible zones, etc.
When I downloaded the Rise demo on the Switch, it just felt really mehh and too much 3DS MH dejavu again. It's like they didn't even try to make something truly new like with MH World.
MH Rise feels just like another 3DS game, just with slightly cleaner graphics and less loading screens.
The only thing new is the dog mount thingie lol. It's cute, but that's it.
So me too, I just can't get excited for MH:Rise after playing MH World extensively.
@Lord the palamutes can't heal the hunter, set traps, use bombs ect, there's certainly a trade off for not taking a palico. I'll probably have one of each for solo, but definitely take the palico online because there's alot of people who barely heal themselves let alone play support and I'm not going to have them cart on me or my HH. Though frankly I'm mostly playing to have a good time so I'm down for playing with new players more than most and there's going to be alot of new hunters with Rise. (welcome to the guild, enjoy your stay!)
@Giancarlothomaz mainline for the portable series. MH has always had Console and Portable side by side. The only exception was 4 & 4U because of stuff involving Sony over Tri and the team being interested in experimenting with the 3ds. Rise is still fifth generation along with world, but for portable.
@Razer
??
Um, it does, actually. In fact it feels more fluid than World. I’ve put over 2,000 hours into this series spanning 5 different games. I know each and everyone like the back of my hand.
The movement in this game is literally copy pasta from World. It’s identical. The weapon moves they share... identical. But then it also has new moves, wirebugs which add even more mobility, and palamutes which add more mobility.
Any perception of being “less fluid” is in your head. This is the most fluid game in the series to date. You can literally play this side by side with World and see the identical movements, be it sliding down hills, running, attacking, etc.
@JaxonH you know the problem with commenting on a 2 week old topic?
You end up getting old news.
I've since gotten over the clunky controls, got to enjoy the demo and pre ordered the game. And I've mentioned that on various other topics.
You should move on and try not to reply to people on a 2 week old topic, if you want to comment then go ahead.
But don't drag others into you being late to the party.
@Razer
Yikes dude, settle down.
I didn't know it was "two weeks old" or that your opinion had changed. I don't need to "move on" from anything. I was simply browsing, saw the article and read your comment. Lighten up
