In those days Intelligent Systems were creative, and the battle systems good. Original characters were real original characters, Paper Mario RPGs were real Paper Mario RPGs, and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri.
Everything changed with the death of Toadsworth. Every other Toad shed their unique features out of grief and respect. Their demonstration of solidarity inspired other species all over the Mushroom Kingdom.
Boswer himself decided to make sure Princess Peach had other things to think about, by kidnapping her more often. Sometimes, the responsibility of keeping the show running was so heavy that he could not find words to speak, and the kidnapping plots would sometimes be repetitive and tired, but the sentiment was there, and Peach knew he did it for her.
The Mushroom Kingdom is healing, but it's always a slow process.
